How to Install Different Shapes of Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrodes?

Molybdenum glass melting electrodes are used to deliver electrical current into glass melts as they can resist to corrosion and oxidation at high temperature. Made of high-purity molybdenum powder and after sintered and forged, electrodes can be formed into different shapes, such as rod and plate. 

The installations of different shapes can be various, and represent their own advantages and disadvantages.

1.Molybdenum threaded rod

The electrode can be installed from the bottom, broadside, top of the furnace. In the all-electric melting furnace, different combinations are used according to different glass types and furnace types. Commonly used are multiple sets of flat inserts, flat inserts + bottom inserts, bottom inserts + inclined inserts, top inserts + horizontal inserts, top inserts + bottom inserts.

Flat insert: it is the most widely used installation as it is very simple to operate. However, the electrode is easy to become thin and bent, and be corroded by glass melts. 

Vertical installation (bottom insert and inclined insert): it is often used for borosilicate glass. With this installation, the electrode will not be adjusted frequently and the furnace will obtain longer service life. Its advantage is that furnace structure is complicated. In that case, it will be strict for installation.

Top installation: it is mostly used in glass and various furnace structures, without contact with the lining material, which can increase the service life of the furnace. But it requires high operation accuracy and needs regular inspection.

2. Molybdenum electrode plate

The plate-shaped electrode can be used in melting tank or picking tank. When used for melting, the glass flow is stable and the melting is uniform, which is shallower than the melting pool using rod electrodes. When used in the picking tank, the current density is low and will not cause secondary bubbles.

How to Improve the Performance of Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrodes (GME)

The molybdenum has been the best material of electrode for melting high-grade optical glass, glass fiber and refractory rock wool for many years thanks to its advantages of high melting point (2620℃), good conductivity and thermal conductivity, small expansion coefficient, high temperature strength and good resistance to glass corrosion.

However, molybdenum is easy to oxide in oxidizing atmosphere at high temperature, and it will be lost due to the intergranular corrosion of glass liquid on electrode surface. Therefore, it is a common concern to improve the quality and performance of molybdenum glass melting electrodes (GME).

1. Production technology control of moly electrode

Ammonium molybdate is heated to obtain molybdenum trioxide; moly trioxide is reduced to molybdenum powder by hydrogen heating; molybdenum powder to form bank electrode in molds under isostatic pressing equipment; the blank electrode to be sintered, forged and machined into finished products.

2. Control of impurity content

The production of moly electrode requires high-quality molybdenum powder. Impurities will cause cracks or hidden cracks of electrode; C and N contents will cause bubbles in the glass liquid, which will affect the quality of finished glass; metal elements such as Ti, Ni, Cu, CD will make the glass colored.

3. Control of molybdenum powder particle size

It is concluded that the molybdenum powder with medium particles and close to normal distribution is the best material for producing high-quality molybdenum electrode products, according to the production experience and data analysis.

4. Sintering of moly electrode

In order to reduce the temperature difference between inside and outside of blank molybdenum electrode, slow and smooth temperature rise and stage heat preservation system are adopted to prevent hidden cracks caused by excessive thermal stress. Appropriate holding temperature and holding time can ensure fine and uniform grain structure.

5. Forging of moly electrode

Adopting appropriate forging process, especially appropriate forging temperature, final forging temperature, deformation and deformation.

Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrodes

Molybdenum glass melting electrodes surface showing the bright silver-white metal color, placed at room temperature in air, will turn dark silver or uniform gray. The higher the purity of molybdenum electrodes the colors look better and smaller annual variation. Molybdenum electrodes according to the processing methods can be divided into: polished molybdenum electrode, ground molybdenum electrode and caustic wash molybdenum electrodes. Molybdenum electrodes after polished the surface will show rendering brown or dark brown color, but this is not the color of molybdenum oxide, which is the color of impurities comprehensive oxides in molybdenum. The light brown color showing the surface uniformity is better, and then the quality is high. Conversely, if the surface is black, and different shades of color, then the poor quality of the electrode. Good quality molybdenum electrodes work in glass melting furnace for a few months the surface remaining silvery white color.
