Molybdenum Foil and Tungsten Foil for Aluminum-ion Battery

Molybdenum foil is a very thin molybdenum sheet. Its thickness usually ranges from 0.002mm to 0.1mm and width should be ≥ 50mm. As the metal foil has the characteristics of high purity, low resistance, good electrochemical performance and chemical stability, it can be used as a current collector in aluminum ion batteries.

Aluminum-ion battery is a rechargeable battery composed of negatively charged aluminum anode, positively charged graphite cathode, diaphragm and electrolyte, and has similar functions to lithium-ion batteries. Due to the abundant and easy availability of aluminum resources, the use of non-flammable and electrochemically stable electrolytes, and the high theoretical specific capacity of aluminum metal anodes, it has attracted great attention from energy storage researchers.

However, the development of aluminum-ion batteries also faces many problems, such as the current collector, the corrosion of the aluminum negative electrode, and the high cost of the electrolyte. Among them, current collectors with good effect are mostly metal molybdenum foil and tantalum foil with inert characteristics and stable performance within the corresponding voltage range in the electrolyte system, but these metals are rare metals and relatively expensive.

Molybdenum foil has better electrochemical performance and chemical stability in aluminum ion batteries compared with other cheap metals such as nickel foil and titanium foil. Therefore, it can better ensure the stable operation of the battery. Studies have shown that nickel foil will have chemical corrosion in the aluminum ion battery system, and unfavorable side reactions will occur at low potentials, and the withstand voltage range is narrow.

Currently, moly foil, tantalum foil, nickel foil and titanium foil are all can be applied in batteries as current collectors. In addition, there is a new metal that was found to be usable as well – tungsten. The tungsten foil used in the batteries has advantages of stable electrochemical performance.

As a professional manufacturer of tungsten and molybdenum for more than two decades, Chinatungsten Online can supply moly and tungsten foils as well as other finished products.

Molybdenum Foil Can Be Used as a Current Collector in Aluminum-ion Battery

Molybdenum foil is a thin sheet made of transition metal molybdenum material, which has the characteristics of high purity, low resistance, good electrochemical performance and chemical stability.

It is lightweight and flexible, can be used as a substrate for the fabrication of CdS-CdTe solar cells. Interaction of selenium, arsenic hydrides, stibine and bismuthine with Mo foil was investigated by atomic absorption spectroscopy. The metal foil may be used to generate metal diffusion bonding in silicon carbide/silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) joints. In addition, when used as a current collector in aluminum-ion batteries. the current collector problem faced by the battery can be solved to a certain extent.

The aluminum-ion battery is a rechargeable battery composed of a negatively charged aluminum anode, a positively charged graphite cathode, a separator and an electrolyte, and has a similar function to that of a lithium-ion battery. Due to its abundant and easy availability of aluminum resources, the use of non-flammable and electrochemically stable electrolytes, and the high theoretical specific capacity of aluminum metal anodes, it has attracted great attention from energy storage researchers.

However, the development of aluminum-ion batteries also faces many problems, such as the current collectors, the corrosion of aluminum anodes, and the high cost of electrolytes. Among them, the current collectors with good effect are mostly metal molybdenum foils and tantalum foils with inert characteristics and stable performance within the corresponding voltage range in the electrolyte system, but such metals are rare metals and relatively expensive.

Compared with cheap metal nickel foil and titanium foil, Mo foil has better electrochemical performance and chemical stability when applied in aluminum ion battery, so it can ensure the stable operation of the battery. Studies have shown that nickel foil will have chemical corrosion in the aluminum-ion battery system, and adverse side reactions will occur at low potentials, and the withstand voltage range is narrow.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to molybdenum foil, tantalum foil, nickel foil and titanium foil that can be used as current collectors for batteries, tungsten foil can also be used. Studies have shown that tungsten foil has stable electrochemical performance in the voltage window range of 0-2.5v.

Mo foil applications

Molybdenum can withstand extremely high temperatures without significantly changing, expanding or softening. This ability makes its engagement in high temperature situations very useful. Therefore, molybdenum metal can be used in the manufacture of armor, aircraft parts, industrial motors, filaments and electrical contacts.

Originally, molybdenum is primarily used as an alloying agent in steel. However, in 1906, William D. Coolidge applied for a patent to make molybdenum ductile, thereby being used as heating elements (molybdenum rods) and shields (molybdenum sheets) in high-temperature furnaces. Molybdenum sheets are also used in the manufacture of missiles and aircraft parts and in the nuclear power industry.

With the advance of technology, thinner sheets are available that is foil. Molybdenum foil is often used for heat and x-ray shielding, production of drawn parts, electronic components, metalizing sources, furnace insulation, and chemically etched parts, and has the ability to be etched into fine patterns, making it useful in the semiconductor industry.

In addition, Mo foils are desirable for space applications. They may be used as a substrate for the fabrication of CdS-CdTe solar cells. Interaction of selenium, arsenic hydrides, stibine and bismuthine with Mo foil was investigated by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, they may be used to generate metal diffusion bonding in silicon carbide/silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) joints.

Mo foil packaging

Considering the thin thickness of the foil, it has to be carefully handled to minimize damage during storage and transportation and to preserve the quality of our products in their original condition.

Molybdenum has a melting point of 2,623 °C, and has high modulus of elasticity. It is very popular because of its extremely high melting point and relative flexibility. When combined with steel and other metals, this combination makes the material highly resistant to extreme temperatures and chemical corrosion. This property is useful when dealing with energy applications, reactive chemicals, high-strength motors, filaments, industrial molds, and so on.

Thanks to the characteristics of molybdenum metal, molybdenum foil has excellent tensile strength and elasticity at different temperatures, and has high heat resistance in a high temperature environment. Therefore, the product is ideal for high temperature vacuum furnace, coating, electronic and semiconductor component applications. In addition, the foil has an extremely low vapor pressure and high melting point, making it ideal for coating applications as evaporation boats.
