Oxidation at High Temperatures

Molybdenum's high melting point, around 2,623°C, makes it ideal for high-temperature applications. However, it readily oxidizes at temperatures above 400°C in the presence of oxygen. This oxidation forms a volatile oxide, which can degrade the material and impair its performance. To mitigate this, moly wires often require protective coatings or are used in inert or vacuum environments, adding complexity and cost to their use.

Cost and Availability

Molybdenum is relatively expensive compared to other metals used in similar usages. Its cost is driven by the complexities of mining, refining, and processing. Additionally, the availability of high-purity molybdenum can be limited, which can affect supply chains and increase lead times for industries relying on this material. The economic feasibility of using molybdenum wire must be carefully evaluated, especially for large-scale or cost-sensitive projects.

Fabrication Difficulties

The fabrication of moly wire presents its own set of challenges. Its high melting point requires specialized equipment and techniques for drawing the wire, often involving hot working processes. Maintaining the desired dimensions and surface quality during fabrication can be difficult, requiring precise control over manufacturing conditions. These factors contribute to higher production costs and potential variability in product quality.

Mo foil applications

Molybdenum can withstand extremely high temperatures without significantly changing, expanding or softening. This ability makes its engagement in high temperature situations very useful. Therefore, molybdenum metal can be used in the manufacture of armor, aircraft parts, industrial motors, filaments and electrical contacts.

Originally, molybdenum is primarily used as an alloying agent in steel. However, in 1906, William D. Coolidge applied for a patent to make molybdenum ductile, thereby being used as heating elements (molybdenum rods) and shields (molybdenum sheets) in high-temperature furnaces. Molybdenum sheets are also used in the manufacture of missiles and aircraft parts and in the nuclear power industry.

With the advance of technology, thinner sheets are available that is foil. Molybdenum foil is often used for heat and x-ray shielding, production of drawn parts, electronic components, metalizing sources, furnace insulation, and chemically etched parts, and has the ability to be etched into fine patterns, making it useful in the semiconductor industry.

Blank molybdenum plateinspectionhot rollingannealing alkali cleaninginspectionwarm rollingannealinginspectioncold rollingannealinginspectionpacking.

In the rolling process, starting from the billet rolling, the rolled piece undergoes plastic deformation under the action of the rolling force, resulting in work hardening. In the subsequent hot and warm rolling, usually one heating is accompanied by multiple passes, so that the two opposite processes of hardening caused by processing and softening of recovery recrystallization exist at the same time, that is, dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization occur; and the deformation is interrupted.

Or the recovery and recrystallization that occur in the annealing, heat preservation process and subsequent cooling after termination are static recovery and static recrystallization, which are mainly reflected in the cold rolling stage. For rolled products or as raw materials for subsequent drawing, stamping and other processes, the process parameters in the rolling process determine the quality, performance and application of the plate itself.

After the blank plate is rolled with a deformation of more than 60%, its density is basically close to the theoretical density of molybdenum. Therefore, the product has high strength, uniform internal structure and excellent high temperature creep resistance.

In addition, due to good thermal conductivity, in the process of using and working, the plate works steadily in cold or high temperature. Now good electrical conductivity has become an essential characteristic of material used in the electronic and electric equipment manufacturing industry.

Advantages and Applications of Molybdenum Electrode for Glass Manufacture‎

Molybdenum electrode is made of pure molybdenum material by powder metallurgy, which has very high purity of 99.95% minimum and a density of 10g/cm3 minimum to ensure the quality of finished glasses and the service life of electrode.

In Chinatungsten Online, regular diameters of moly electrode range from 20mm to 155mm and the length can reach 1000mm or more, depending on the usage of clients. Usually, the electrode is machined with thread – outer thread or both outer and inner threads. Actually, the current moly electrode replaces original heavy oil and gas energy, effectively reducing environmental pollution and improving the quality of glass.

Advantages

The material of molybdenum is softer than tungsten material and has an incomparable modulus of elasticity with tungsten. Moreover, moly electrode has high melting point, good machining, corrosion resistance, low expansion, ultra-high strength and rigidity, excellent thermal conductivity, good ductility, easy manufacturing, low emissivity, low resistivity, low vapor pressure, etc.

Applications

Thanks to its superior characteristics, moly electrode can be applied in different fields. For example, it can be used for welding non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, nickel), such as copper braid for switches welding with metal sheet. And considering its high temperature strength, high temperature oxidation resistance, long service life, corrosion resistance and not easy to color glass, moly electrode is widely used in daily-use glass, optical glass, insulation materials, glass fiber, rare earth industry and other fields.

The impurity and grain size of molybdenum powder directly affect the performance of the electrode, and the addition of trace rare earth alloy elements to the electrode can improve the particle size and performance of the molybdenum electrode. At the same time, the selection of raw materials and process control in the process of preparing molybdenum electrodes also affect the performance of the product to varying degrees.

Chinatungsten Online is a professional manufacturer of tungsten and molybdenum with more than 20 years’ producing experience. The Glass Melting Electrodes (GMEs) we provided has very high purity and long service life.

Molybdenum Target Applications

Molybdenum target is mainly used in plasma sputtering industry. With the electric field, electron collided with the argon atom molybdenum target when fly to the substrate, then argon atoms and electrics were ionized .The electrics fly to the substrate while argon atoms accelerate to bomb the target, the neutral atoms (or molecules) in the target deposit on the substrate and become the coating.

3.Molybdenum Crucible Applications:

Molybdenum crucible is sintered or forged from the ultimate material—molybdenum powder. Generally speaking, molybdenum crucible is used pure molybdenum, for its purity can prevent melting metal powder from mingling. The density of molybdenum crucible is more than 9.8g/cm3, and its working temperature is among 1100℃. Therefore, it is another ring choice, besides tungsten crucible in metal melting industry.

Molybdenum crucible is widely used in metallurgical industry, rare earth industry, artificial crystal and machinery.
