Molybdenum Disulfide Is Used as an Additive in Lubricating Grease and Coating

With the advance of modern science, technology and industry, machinery and equipment require to be highly mechanized, automated, super-large, high-precision, high-parameter, and can be used in special working conditions. Accordingly, general lubricating grease can no longer meet its lubrication requirements.

The appeal of solid lubricants promoted the lubrication technology to a new stage. This new lubricant has many superior properties, such as high temperature resistance, radiation resistance, high vacuum resistance, corrosion resistance, etc., and has been widely used in high-speed flight, astronautics, electronics industry, chemical industry, machinery industry at home and abroad.

There are many types of solid lubricants, such as graphite, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), graphite fluoride, tungsten disulfide, boron nitride and so on. At present, the most widely used is molybdenum disulfide, and the best properties are boron nitride and fluorinated graphite.

MoS2 is entitled as "King of Lubrication". It is solid powder made from natural molybdenum concentrate with the advantages of anti-wear, anti-friction, high temperature resistance, extreme pressure resistance, etc. Nowadays, it is widely used as an additive in lubricating grease, powder metallurgy, modified plastics, coating and other industries and is becoming an indispensable and irreplaceable industrial additive product.

Boron nitride is a crystal composed of nitrogen atoms and boron atoms. It is used as high-temperature lubricants, mold release agents, high-frequency insulating materials, and solid-phase doping materials for semiconductors. It can be also used as high-temperature lubricants and a mold release agent for a model.

Graphite fluoride is synthesized by the "gas phase method" from the extremely toxic elemental gas fluorine with extremely high activity, which is dangerous and difficult. It is an important inorganic non-metallic material with excellent lubricity and is used as an active material for batteries and electrodes.

Chinatungsten Online is committed to producing tungsten and molybdenum products and MoS2 powder is one of the most popular products in our company.

The Production and Applications of Molybdenum Plate

Molybdenum metal has very wide applications due to its good characteristics of corrosion resistance and high abrasion resistance. In the glass melting industry, molybdenum electrode is used to melt glass; in the automotive industry, MoS2 is an additive for solid grease; molybdenum target is used in the electronics and semiconductor industries.

Material from 2mm to 76mm in thickness is classified as molybdenum plate. It can be used in in a diverse array of applications including precision sputtering targets, machining blanks, furnace hearth rails, x-ray shielding, nuclear fuel sintering boats, and others.

How to produce molybdenum plate? The following is its production process:

Blank molybdenum plateinspectionhot rollingannealing alkali cleaninginspectionwarm rollingannealinginspectioncold rollingannealinginspectionpacking.

In the rolling process, starting from the billet rolling, the rolled piece undergoes plastic deformation under the action of the rolling force, resulting in work hardening. In the subsequent hot and warm rolling, usually one heating is accompanied by multiple passes, so that the two opposite processes of hardening caused by processing and softening of recovery recrystallization exist at the same time, that is, dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization occur; and the deformation is interrupted.

Or the recovery and recrystallization that occur in the annealing, heat preservation process and subsequent cooling after termination are static recovery and static recrystallization, which are mainly reflected in the cold rolling stage. For rolled products or as raw materials for subsequent drawing, stamping and other processes, the process parameters in the rolling process determine the quality, performance and application of the plate itself.

After the blank plate is rolled with a deformation of more than 60%, its density is basically close to the theoretical density of molybdenum. Therefore, the product has high strength, uniform internal structure and excellent high temperature creep resistance.

In addition, due to good thermal conductivity, in the process of using and working, the plate works steadily in cold or high temperature. Now good electrical conductivity has become an essential characteristic of material used in the electronic and electric equipment manufacturing industry.

How to Remove the Oxide Layer of Molybdenum Rod?

Molybdenum rod is a rod-shaped product made from high quality molybdenum powder and gains characteristics of high melting point, good thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion from molybdenum metal itself. Even in high temperature, it can resist oxidation and has high strength.

Because of high melting point of molybdenum metal itself, moly rods are widely machined into electrodes, screws, heating elements, connectors for high temperature furnaces, stir rods for rare earth smelting industry, and bulb holders in the electric lighting industry.

There are four surface conditions for this product:

1. Sintered: its surface shows silver-gray metallic.

2. Forged: there is a layer of oxide on the surface with black color.

3. Grounded: forged moly rods are machined with smooth and metallic luster surface.

4. Polished: surface is very smooth after machined.

The surface of forged rods is allowed to have oxide file and slight traces after forging and grounded or polished ones shall be anti-oxidation. All surfaces should be no delamination, cracks, burrs and longitudinal cracks and other defects.

However, although molybdenum metal can resist high temperature, its products exposed to the air at room temperature will still oxide slightly. How to remove oxide layer on the surface?

In addition to the most common method of alkaline cleaning, acid pickling is another effective method to clean metal bars. Here I recommend a solution for everyone: 50% nitric acid by volume mixes with 10% hydrofluoric acid by volume. The temperature during the cleaning process must be controlled between 102 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. This mixed pickling can not only effectively remove the oxide layer on the molybdenum rods, but also remove the copper left on the product during the EDM process. After pickling, molybdenum products must be washed repeatedly in clean water.

Since the mixed acid is a high-risk item, strict protective measures should be taken in all cleaning steps. Appropriate safety equipment during cleaning includes masks, acid-resistant gloves, chemical-resistant aprons and boots should be equipped and the working environment should be in very good ventilation.

Molybdenum Sputtering Target Is Essential for Semiconductor Chip

Nowadays, sputtering targets have a wide range of applications, from semiconductor chip to the film deposition of various materials in integrated circuit processing, to energy-saving glass, familiar golden tungsten carbide coting made of titanium nitride and wire-resistance coatings for tools and daily necessities. Many materials can be obtained in the form of sputtering targets during fabrication of CDs and DVDs.

Sputtering is a mature technology, which can deposit films of various materials on many shapes and sizes of substrates. This process is repeatable and can be extended from small projects to the production of medium and large substrate areas. The sputtering gas is usually an inert gas, such as argon. In order to effectively transfer momentum, the mass of the incident particles must match the mass of the target.

In order to obtain the required characteristics in the sputter-deposited film, the materials and processes used to manufacture the sputtering target are critical. In addition to pure metal targets such as tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, titanium, and silicon, there are also alloy targets and compounds such as oxides or nitrides. The process of determining the material is as important as the deposition operating parameters perfected by engineers and scientists during the coating process.

The sputtering target is usually with round or rectangular shapes, other shapes including square and triangular designs also can be customized. The substrate is the object to be coated, which can include semiconductor wafers, solar cells, optical components or many other possibilities. The thickness of the coating is usually in the range of angstroms to micrometers, and the film can be a single material or multiple materials in a multilayer structure.

As a refractory metal with a very wide range of uses, molybdenum has excellent mechanical properties, low expansion, high thermal conductivity and extremely high electrical conductivity at high temperatures. As a sputtering target, it can be many possibilities, such as pure molybdenum target, molybdenum titanium target, molybdenum tantalum target, molybdenum alloy target (such as TZM plate). The molybdenum sputtering target has the characteristics of high purity, high density, uniform fine crystal grains, so as to obtain extremely high sputtering efficiency, uniform film thickness and smooth etching surface during sputtering.

Molybdenum Sputtering Target for Flat Panel Displays, Marking China’s Breakthrough on This Technology

China has developed the first G6 super-large high-end molybdenum target with completely independent intellectual property rights, and put into mass production in 2018. This means that China is the first country that can produce super-size target for semiconductors in the Asia-Pacific region, and breaks the European monopoly on this core technology.

As we all known, limited by equipment and technology, China have to import a large number of this kind of product every year, but now, the breakthrough means that China has taken a crucial step in the localization of core materials for high-end displays.

You may not know the connection of target and our daily life. Actually, they are everywhere in our daily such as smartphones, tablets and color TVs. Molybdenum target, also known as molybdenum sputtering target, it is one of the core materials of the semiconductor industry, more specifically, it is the key core raw material in LCD flat panel displays. In the modern life, we spend several hours or even more than ten hours in a day with it. That’s right, ‘it’ is the mobile phone OLED screen.

It is proved that materials are the foundation for all products. High-end products and high-tech products have higher requirements for them. You may be a little curious why molybdenum is one of the preferred materials for sputtering targets.

flat panel displays image

Chromium was previously used as the wiring material for flat-panel displays, but it can no longer meet the higher requirements with the advance of technology. For molybdenum material, it has good advantages of high melting point, high conductivity and good corrosion resistance, and its specific impedance and film stress are only 1/2 of that of chromium. In addition, molybdenum is an environmentally friendly material. Therefore, molybdenum has become one of the preferred materials for sputtering targets for flat panel displays. Experts expressed that molybdenum material can greatly improve the brightness, contrast, color and other performance of liquid crystal displays and extend their service life.

As a professional manufacturer of tungsten and molybdenum over two decades, Chinatungsten Online can not only offer molybdenum target, molybdenum alloy targets, but also can offer tungsten and related targets.
