How to Extend the Service Life of Molybdenum Wires

Molybdenum wires are pressed and sintered from our high purity molybdenum powders to compact ingots by powder metallurgy and then drawing. As a leading molybdenum manufacturer, we are capable of providing wires with a range of diameter from 20 microns to 2mm.

Many end-users would require a good quality of products. How to extend the service life of these wires? Here are some tips:

1.Installation

Wires made of molybdenum are easily deformed and broken. Therefore, they can not be bended during installation. If bended, cut it off to avoid wire breakage during operation. The cutting fluid should also be replaced in time during use because it will turn black after a long time of use, which will directly affect the performance of products.

2.Operation

When the wire is discharged during operation, it will also be damaged. However, due to the good mechanical properties of molybdenum, the damage is small. Therefore, it would be better to using low-energy processing parameters to reduce the damage. After running for a period of time when the color of wire becomes write, workpieces can be cut with normal high current. In addition, after replacing the wire, running new wire for 5-10 minutes before cutting the workpiece, so that the internal stress of the molybdenum wires can be released.

When the moly wire breaks during the operation of the cutting machine, most of the broken ends are within a dozen to dozens of turns after the reversing of the wire barrel. It can be seen that the metal wire at both ends of the head and tail is easier to be broken. Therefore, in the cutting process, the wire barrel is reversed to form a switch control block and move a little outward or inward at regular intervals.

3. Maintenance

Routine maintenance of molybdenum wire can also improve the service life, such as: daily storage, placement and time. It should be stored in a ventilated and cool place with low humidity, and the temperature is 20℃~25℃ to avoid oxidation. In addition, it should not be placed for more than 6 months. While using it, check whether the packaging is damaged or deformed.

How do Impurities of Glass Material Affect Service Life of Molybdenum Electrode?

Among the types of cups and pots on the market, glass is the healthiest, safest, and most widely used cups, according to relevant research data. There are various kinds of glasses in the market, but only those with pure glass material, crystal clear body, and moist feel are deeply loved by consumers. How to produce high-quality glass?

The production process of glass is batching, melting, forming, sintering and annealing. Among them, melting is extremely important for the quantity of finished products and is the top priority in the process. The prepared raw materials are heated in a glass furnace at a high temperature to form a uniform and bubble-free glass liquid. This is a very complicated physical and chemical reaction process, and the quality control of the electrodes used as electric heating should be very strict for each glass factory.

molybdenum electrode image

The glass melting electrode must be able to withstand corrosive glass melting and strong high temperature. Bubbles are not permitted in the process of contact with molten glass, and the product of corrosion of electrode material must not bring any defect to finished glass. Now pure molybdenum material is proved to be the most suitable material for these challenging conditions, considering its characteristics of excellent creep resistance, outstanding corrosion resistance, high purity and good thermal and electrical conductivity.

However, the glass melting process is usually accompanied by various problems.

molybdenum electrode image

Glass hybrid materials usually contain chemical impurities, such as As2O3, Sb2O3 and sulfur. If they react with cerium oxide, they will make the glass yellow. If the iron, chromium and other elements in the raw materials exceed the standard, the glass will turn green or yellow, which will waste a lot of decolorizing agent. In the glass furnace, over chemical impurities will have a serious impact on normal operation of the electrode.

Nitric acid water is a liquid mixture mainly composed of sodium sulfate and sodium fluoride. The presence of a large amount of sodium ions makes it highly conductive and always floats on the viscous layer of liquid glass. At the junction of recycling cooling water and electrode jacket, the electrode is short but with high current density. If the nitric acid water reacts with the electrode, the molybdenum electrode will be far unable to carry the current density and then break.

The purity of the molybdenum electrode is very important, which requires at least 99.95% and the content of impurities needs to be controlled under a certain value to prevent the purity problem from affecting the service life. At the same time, the quality of glass material also needs to be guaranteed. Nitric acid water seems trivial, but it can destroy countless electrodes.

Current Density Is Important to Service Life of Molybdenum Electrode

Current density is one of the most important parameters for designing the glass electric melting furnace, which is also a very important factor that affects the service life of molybdenum electrode. Controlling the right current density helps the extension of electrode’s working life.

molybdenum electrode picture

Molybdenum electrodes are simultaneously subjected to the combined effects of electricity, high temperature and corrosion during smelting. Chemical corrosion and electrochemical corrosion are unavoidable. The experimental analysis shows that the corrosion rate of the electrode is closely related to the current density in the same molten glass.

When the current density is low, the temperature of the moly electrode is lower than the molten glass’s. As the current density increases, the temperature of the electrode reaches or even exceeds the temperature difference of the molten glass. If the relationship between the corrosion rate and the temperature in the medium alkali glass is quantitatively detected, it will be found that the higher the temperature, the greater the corrosion rate. Based on the results of various research experiments, it can be judged that if the current density increases and the temperature of the electrode area rises, it will affect chemical reaction process of the electrode, change flow state of the glass in the electrode area, and finally corrode molybdenum electrode rapidly.

molybdenum electrode picture

The temperature of electrode is proportional to the current density, and its critical current density value can be 0.4-0.7A/cm2, according to a large number of production experiments. Under this current density, 8-10mm thickness of electrode can work for more than 2 years. The maximum allowable current density is about 2-3A/cm2. In order to make the corrosion less, if it is alkali-free glass, the current load should be smaller. When the current density is less than 1.00A/cm2, the molybdenum electrode can better resist the corrosion of the molten glass. On the contrary, when the current density is higher than 1.00A/cm2, the corrosion rate will naturally increase, and bubbles will be generated on the interface between the molybdenum electrode and the molten glass.

In short, controlling the current density reasonably in glass melting is essential for the application of molybdenum electrode. Chinatungsten Online provides high-purity and high-quality molybdenum electrode worldwide.

Factors That Affect Service Life of MoSi2 Heating Element

One of our customers contacted us that the tolerance of MoSi2 heating element they purchased was too large for them and required small tolerance in our future orders. Why they requested exact diameter when most our customers would not require for product tolerance?

MoSi2 heating element picture

The season was soon clear. The element was used in electric furnaces for dental technicians. The dimensional accuracy of the hot end will directly affect the precise control of the temperature of the electric furnace.

When there is a tolerance in the diameter, the cross-sectional area and resistance value will change as well as heating value of the electric heating component. 0.1mm diameter tolerance means 7% of the calorific value. If the tolerance is +/-0.5mm, it is conceivable that its influence is great. In the meantime, the change means the heat uniformity in the electric furnace or the service life of the electric heating components will be greatly affected.

MoSi2 heating element picture

In addition to the tolerance of diameters, what will affect the service life of this product:

1. Products to be produced. For example, the service life for producing special glass is different from that used in the reflective material industry and the magnetic material industry. The magnetic material industry has the longest service life and special glass the shortest.

2. Product quality. The raw materials and manufacturing processes determine the product quality.

3. The quality of the furnace.

4. Surface problems. Working at a temperature of 1800 ℃ for a long time, the protective glaze layer can flake away when cycling the temperature, eventually eroding the element after many cycles.

5. Operators. Overheat, control failures and over power will cause the failure of heating element.

6. Product contamination. Product or atmosphere reacts with the protective glaze causing deterioration of the element.

7. Insulation issues. Elements too tight in insulation, insulation shifts and breaks the element, or elements contact the insulation and overheat.

Tips for Molybdenum Wire Service Life Extension

Tips for extending the service life of molybdenum wire are as follows:

1. Molybdenum wire operation
During discharge operation, molybdenum wire worked with the workpiece will damage itself, but because of molybdenum has good mechanical properties, so the loss will not obvious. In order to extent the life of molybdenum wire, when the machine is replaced on new molybdenum wire, there should use small energy processing parameters for cutting, which can reduce the damage of molybdenum wire. After machine running a period of time, molybdenum wire color is basically white and then use the normal high current for cutting. In addition, after the replacement of molybdenum wire and before cutting, molybdenum wire should operate without workpiece cutting for 5-10 minutes, so that the internal stress of molybdenum wire can be released.

molybdenum wire picture

Molybdenum wire usually fails in the process of cutting operation and the majority of broken end is in the wire cylinder after the exchange of ten to dozens of laps. From this we can see both ends of the molybdenum wires are easier to be broken. Therefore, during operation, at regular intervals, the molybdenum wire tube should be adjusted.

2. Molybdenum wire maintenance
molybdenum wire picture
Daily molybdenum wire maintenance can also improve its service life, such as daily molybdenum wire storage, placement and storage time and so on. Molybdenum wire should be reported on the low humidity, ventilated and shady places and the temperature is at 20 ℃ ~ 25 ℃, to avoid oxidation. Another molybdenum wire placed in the time should not exceed 6 months, because longer time storage is more likely to show the problem of perpendicular. Before using should to check whether the packaging is damaged or deformed.

3. Molybdenum wire installation
Molybdenum wire is easily deformed and broken, so it should not be bended in the process of installation. If there are bends, the bends should be cut off to avoid broken wires in the course of operation. In the course of the use the cutting fluid should be replaced, because cutting fluid after a long time use will turn to black, which will directly affect the performance of molybdenum wire, leading to molybdenum wire fracture.
